EDUCATION BOON FOR THESE JUVENILES

Kuala Lumpur: The education Ministry is providing teachers for juveniles in prisons nationwide to help them their studies.

There are about 2,500 juveniles in prison.

Those between 14 and 21 can be jailed in the eight juveniles prisons.

Children under 18 are sent to a Henry Gurney School or other school after sentencing.

Prisons Department deputy superintendent Ranjit Singh said the ministry provided the syllabus for student in prison.

“The juveniles inmates have shown tremendous interest in furthering their studies. Some even expressed interest in furthering their studies.”

Ranjit said this had given the juveniles hope in life and they didn’t feel left out of society.

“We also get help from non-government organization with teaching, counseling and sponsorship.”

He said Prihatin Malaysia had sponsored more than 30 computers.

Shelters home ahad shown interest in rehabilitating the juveniles and it had obtained sponsorship to help these girls and boys fit back into the community when they are ready.

Ranjit said other NGOs involved included the Rotary blud, Malausian Care, Putera UMNO, Catholic associations and the Melaysian Buddhist Association.
