SAMSUNG YOUTHpreneur Empowering Henry Gurney Inmates in
Digital Micro-Enterprises
SAMSUNG YOUTHpreneur: Empowering
Henry Gurney Inmates in Digital Micro-Enterprises
is a social project to empower 387 inmates of Henry Gurney Schools
with multimedia and desktop publishing skills to enable them to
become micro-entrepreneurs.
The project aims to give guidance, hope, skills and
confidence for the inmates to start afresh a new lease of life.
ICT is used to prepare, train and enhance the target group’s ability
to offer niche services in multimedia and desktop publishing.
Upon completion of the detention period, the inmates
will be able to offer services such as desktop publishing, digital
photography, digital videography and telecenter services. In addition,
seminars, workshops and motivational talks will be organised to
build capacity and confidence of the inmates.
Currently, there are no comprehensive ICT based trainings
for the inmates. Instead, traditional, vocational-based training
such as batik-printing, handicraft-making and tailoring are provided.
There is also a lack of self-esteem, confidence and ambition among
the inmates due to lack of guidance and knowledge to go after
the opportunities available in the outside world.
The SAMSUNG YOUTHpreneur program
targets to help 36 inmates in the Henry Gurney (Girls) School
in Batu Gajah, Perak and 351 inmates in Henry Gurney (Boys) School
in Malacca. Henry Gurney Schools (HGS) is established to detain
youths in the age bracket of 14 to 21 years under the order of
Juvenile Court.
