ICT skills
development for the less fortunate

Pertubuhan prihatin social has won the Samsung Digital Hope
grant for the second consecutive year. It has proposed the
empowerment of 350 unemployed youth in economically disadvantaged
neighborhood with information and communications technology
(ICT) skills and knowledge.
The RM 255,000 from Samsung will be used to set up a one
stop technology centre for facilitating ICT skill development.
Among the e-life skill training outlined are lesson on creative
multimedia, desktop publishing, digital photography and videography,
telecentre services and computer repairs.
According to Prihatin’s Chairman Mr. Mahalingam Chelliah,
the centre will also run activates to build marginalized youth
confidence and self-esteem and become and avenue to help them
network with small and medium-sized enterprises for job opportunities. |

The Samsung Digital Hope programme is in its fourth year and award
fund to organization for various technology breaking project. It
also leverage on technology
leadership to provide a better future for the less fortunate worldwide.
This year, 16 recipients South-East Asia and Australia will benefit
from US$620,000 ( RM 2.23 million) grant programme.
“Just two months ago, when Samsung executive meet in Singapore
about this programme, it was decided that an Extra US$120,000 would
be given to this region from the allocated US$500,000 to reach out
to the unfortunate.
“The flood victim in Johor and Melacca will also receive
aid from samsung as we are dispatching our support team to help
our costumer there. We believe in reaching out to the less fortunate
and will expand our charitable activities yearly.” Says Samsung
Malaysia Electronic Shd.Bhd’s Chief Executive officer and
Managing director Min Yong Ho.
Samsung also awarded United Voice, a self-advocacy society for
people with learning disabilities in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
A RM 34,000 grant. The society, which has a membership of 75, will
use the grant to set up a computer lab to help members learn word
processing, presentation skill and Web design skill so as to equip
them the basic of employment skill.
Most the member are the person with Down Syndrome, Autism, Attention
deficit hyper-activity disorder, cerebral palsy, and global development
delay.
According to the society’s representative Cynthia Joann Thomas.
The skill that people with disabilities learn will give them opportunity
to earn an income thought the society’s employment project
that involve making greeting cards and wedding invitation.
